Today marks whole six years since I landed at LaGuardia Airport with just two suitcases and backpack, starting my new life in New York.

The first half year went by in a blur—marriage paperwork, getting my Social Security number, applying for my green card. Then the pandemic hit, and like for everyone, it changed so much about daily life and plans.

Before moving here for good, I had spent half a year in Florence, a year and a half in New York, and a few months in different countries across Asia and Europe for business trips. But living abroad for a longer time makes me feel even more Japanese—in language, in mindset, in small things like food. My English still sounds Japanese and I still crave the same flavors I grew up with.

Over these six years, we’ve made some sweet memories—short trips, family events, new cafes and restaurants, concerts. Now I’m still here with my husband and two cats.

When I look around, it’s easy to notice all the things that are out of my control—things that make me nervous, worried, uncertain. But I try to focus on the good, listen to my own voice, stay grounded in who I am, and appreciate what I have.

I believe more good things are coming this year.
