Two weeks ago (April 27th), I joined the Brooklyn Yarn Crawl — an annual event where several local yarn stores each host their own happenings across the borough. It’s not a big gathering at one place; instead, you visit each shop to enjoy their individual raffles, limited-edition yarn colors, exclusive tote bags, discounts, and other crafty treats.
This year, five local yarn stores participated — and yes, I went to all five!
If you don’t know me well, I’m a big knitter. Not just in winter, but even in summer I’m working on something, whether it’s socks or sweaters. This time, I was on the hunt for cotton or linen yarn, perfect for warmer-weather projects.
At Argyle Yarn Shop, I found a beautiful, vivid red cotton yarn. I’ve bought their hand-dyed yarn before (I love their in-house colors!), but this red one wasn’t from their original line — it was a recommendation from the owner. I couldn’t resist, and I’ve already cast on a new project!
For me, knitting is a mindfulness activity. It’s a different creative world from jewelry-making, but sometimes these creative activities cross over and inspire each other. And often, when I finish a knitting project, I wear it to my pop-up events — it feels extra meaningful to wear something handmade when sharing my handmade jewelry.
If you’re a creator, what inspires you?
Sometimes it’s not directly related to your main work — like how knitting, for me, feeds my jewelry ideas. Visiting new places, trying new materials, or simply stepping into another maker’s space can spark fresh energy. That’s part of why I love events like the yarn crawl: they remind me how wide and connected the creative world really is.
